CARRIE

Saturday 13th December

Saturday morning comes and I drive back to Seastone in a pensive mood. Frankie’s house is dark and miserable today, and I’m not thrilled at the prospect of going through more of her stuff. After my online discoveries, I’m wondering if Ethan is ever going to be honest with me and tell me what happened. His half-sister was not a sweet, loving woman with his best interests at heart. She was a deeply troubled person who was possessed of an all-consuming jealousy of her brother’s success.

Ethan let me into the house and then almost immediately drove off, saying he had to stay with Hector that day as he couldn’t find anyone to dog sit him. Fair enough. But I wonder why he just doesn’t bring the dog here with us. I wouldn’t mind. It’s kind of reassuring to have a walking rug following me around, and I would welcome Ethan’s company.

I start in the dining room, where I left off last time, taking down books from the shelves and stacking them in a cardboard box on the floor. Again, I have the feeling that someone else has been through them at speed, shoving Frankie’s beloved books back on the shelf with little care.

These books appear to be all about reptiles, snakes in particular. The woman had an obsession with snakes. I shudder and stack them as neatly as possible into the box, tape it up, and use the marker pen to write on the side. I take all morning to clear the right-hand cupboard of books and all I have left to do is a white shallow box sitting on the floor of the cabinet.

I slide the box out of its space and take off the lid. There, in a glass case, is a large python.

With a shriek, I scramble to my feet and spin away to the other side of the room. I take a moment to realise it’s a dead snake, stuffed and motionless.

Holy mother-shagging crap! I nearly had a heart attack.

Who does that, for God’s sake? Taxidermy? That’s surely a sign of someone odd, isn’t it?

I hate snakes. I mean, I really, really hate snakes. I once saw a grass snake moving at high speed in my dad’s back garden, and that freaked me out enough not to go out there for that entire summer. But this episode is going to give me nightmares for the next ten years.

My hands are shaking as I walk out the back of the house into the cold and wet garden. I pluck my phone from my back pocket and ring Ethan’s number. He doesn’t answer, and it rings off. I stand in the garden, my hands on my hips, trying to bring my breathing back under control.

A moment later and my phone rings. The sound of blustery wind comes down the phone.

“Sorry, I was walking Hector,” he says.

“Where are you?”

“The beach. What’s up?”

“There’s a bloody snake in the house.”

There is a long pause.

“Ah. You found him.”

“You knew?”

“That’s Brian. I wasn’t sure she still had him, to be honest.
